High School Honor Jazz Bands Open Auditions 2008
The NMJW is developing up to two new honor jazz ensembles (18-20 piece traditional jazz ensembles) for area high school students. These groups include:
• Jazz Workshop I (Our top High School Honor Jazz Band)
• Jazz Workshop II (Ensemble made up of alternates)
Students who participate in these groups will have access to some of New Mexico's finest jazz performer/educators. Many of the area's best jazz clinicians will be scheduled. Both groups will present several concerts throughout the year, including performances at some of Albuquerque's most prestigious musical venues.
• Multiple Performances through out the city
• The NMJW Big Band Extravaganza (Part of Jazz Under the Stars)
• And other electrifying concerts currently in the "Works"!
Audition Information
Dates: Saturday, September 6 and Sunday, September 7, 2008
Scheduling: Call the New Mexico Jazz Workshop at 255-9798 to schedule an audition time.
Location: New Mexico Jazz Workshop, 5500 Lomas NE
Directors: Band I--Ed Ulman, Band II--Tyler North (Band Director at Sandia High School)
Eligibility: All Albuquerque and Central New Mexico high school musicians are eligible to audition. Students who wish to participate are required to be enrolled in an instrumental program at the student's school where an ensemble is offered for that student's particular instrument. Where applicable, the student should also be enrolled in a school jazz ensemble. Home schooled students and students attending charter schools without an organized instrumental music program do not need to meet this requirement.
Commitment: The NMJW is sponsoring two Honor Jazz Ensembles with a full big band instrumentation. Selected students will be expected to participate the entire school year. Should a student have to leave mid-year, alternates for the top jazz band will be selected from the 2nd jazz band.
Audition Requirements:
Prepared Material- Play any jazz etude or a jazz soli from your current jazz band literature. The goal is to present a prepared piece that shows off your best jazz playing.
Improvisation- Students can choose to improvise on a tune of their choice from one of the following Aebersold Play-A-Long Recordings. Vol. 54-Maiden Voyage or Vol. 70-Killer Joe. Students not familiar with any of these jazz tunes may elect to improvise over an F Concert of Bb Concert blues.
Scales- Chromatic Scale over the entire length of your instrument. Bb Concert Major scale, tongued. F Concert Major scale, slurred.
Sight Reading- Up to three jazz excerpts of contrasting styles will be provided for sight reading.
Pianists, Guitarists and Bassists- In addition to the above material, should be prepared to sight read jazz chord progressions in both straight ahead and Latin jazz styles.
Set Drummers- Will be required to play straight ahead jazz time at three different tempos. They will also be required to demonstrate bossa nova and samba styles. Drummers should have a favorite rock pattern ready and should be able to demonstrate their use of brushes at a ballad tempo.
Audition Fee $10.00
Students selected will be charged
a $95.00 per semester fee to participate.

Middle School Honor Jazz Band Open Auditions 2008
The NMJW is holding auditions for an middle school honor jazz ensemble (up to a 30-piece traditional jazz ensemble) for area middle school students. Students who participate in this group will have access to some of New Mexico's finest jazz performer/educators. Many of the area's best jazz clinicians will be scheduled. The group will present several concerts throughout the year, including performances at some of Albuquerque's most prestigious musical venues.

Eligibility: All Albuquerque and Central New Mexico middle school musicians are eligible to audition.
