Trumpeter Kent Erickson is band director at Hoover Middle School and a member of the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra.
Darin Goldston is a lifelong New Mexico resident and self-taught blues guitarist. He has been playing lead guitar for more than 25 years and is the founder of the successful blues band, Memphis P.Tails. Since '92, the P.Tails have performed over 100 shows a year and shared the stage with James Harman, Little Charlie and the Nitecats, John Waite, Tab Benoit, Johnny Winter and Jimmy Vaughn. Darin has been a lifelong blues enthusiast who has always focused on the raw, naked roots of the blues.
Cathryn McGill, a popular local jazz/blues singer will be your Divadom coach. Cathryn has been leading bands and performing in concerts and nightclubs all over the Southwest region for the past 20 years. Ms. McGill has a theater background having performed in many live theater productions including her own critically acclaimed one-woman show.
Cindy Tag has a Master's degree in Jazz from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she studied with Jerry Coker. Subsequent teachers include David Baker, David Liebman, and Eddie Daniels. Since moving to Albuquerque in 1997, Cindy has taught music privately and gigs regularly with the Blues Kings, Café Mocha, the Koolers, Savoy, and Swingset and the Southwest Jazz Orchestra.
Jack Manno worked in New York as a professional studio singer and arranger of vocal jazz. He has five albums to his credit and has arranged five jazz cameo performances for the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. Jack is also the founding director of the Southwest Jazz Orchestra.
César Bauvallet is a summa cum laude graduate of the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory in Havana, César has over 24 years experience performing in Cuban salsa orchestras. At the age of 17, he began performing nightly in the cabarets of Havana. By his 20's, César was traveling throughout Europe and Latin America with groups such as Manguaré, Orchestra Pacho Alonzo and Grupo Guaicán. Other groups of which he was a member included Orchestra Cubana de Música Moderna and Orchestra del Teatro Sauto. Since 1977, César has also worked steadily as a studio musician in Cuba (EGREM) and more recently in New Mexico. Some of his other musical accomplishments include being chosen by Arturo Sandoval as trombonist for Dizzy Gillespie's All-Star Orchestra (Havana Jazz Festival, 1989) and performing with renowned Puerto Rican cuatro player Yomo Toro (Albuquerque, NM, 1994). In addition to Son Como Son, César performs regularly on trombone, congas and keyboards with a variety of local bands including the jazz ensemble Tetragon, the Caribbean mix band Pandemonium, the reggae band No Question and the theatrical band A Slice of Life . He is also a member of Tá-Bení, an Afro-Cuban percussion ensemble which specializes in demonstrating the highly complex rhythms of the Batá drums and Rumba.
Honor Jazz Ensembles
Edward J. Ulman is a musician (trombone/arranger/band leader), concert presenter, jazz advocate, educator/clinician, and music contractor. He served as Executive Director of the New Mexico Jazz Workshop (NMJW) 2001-06. Before moving to Albuquerque, Ulman was the Executive Director and Education Coordinator for the Tucson Jazz Society, one of the largest jazz societies in the country boasting 2,500 members.
Ulman founded the NMJW honor jazz band program in 2002. He currently directs the top high school honor jazz ensemble and guided the Summer Jazz Intensive at the Albuquerque Academy for three years. Over 100 Albuquerque mid-school and high school students are served annually through participation in two high school bands, a middle school band, and three to four summer combos. Many past NMJW students have continued their jazz studies at prestigious university music programs.
As a performer, Ulman is a featured soloist with the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra, Southwest Jazz Orchestra, Charanga del Valle, and the NDI Orchestra. He contracts orchestras for casinos in the area and performs with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra several times a year.
Ulman holds a degree in trombone performance from the University of Idaho's Lionel Hampton School of Music and a masters of science in teaching from Portland State University. While a doctoral candidate at the University of Arizona, Ulman taught orchestration, jazz arranging and directed small and large jazz ensembles. Ulman has judged jazz, marching band and solo/ensemble festivals for over 15 years. He directed the 2nd New Mexico All-State Jazz Ensemble (2005). He has served the International Association for Jazz Education as a panelist (2001) and South Central Regional committee member (2003-05).
Roots of Jazz
For over ten years Frank Leto has played the key role in our Roots of Jazz program in the Albuquerque Public Schools, directing the quintet that tours elementary schools. His narrating and performing is as informative as it is entertaining. In addition, Frank has conducted an Adult Lecture Series on the African Roots of Jazz and has taught steel drum at the Summer Jazz Camp. His ensemble, PANdemonium has performed at Jazz Under the Stars and Yule Struttin’. His work history includes writing, arranging and performing early childhood education and curriculum materials development. He has enjoyed a thirty-year performance career, playing Brazilian and Caribbean music in San Francisco, Hawaii and New Mexico. He has several recordings to his credit for children and general listening. He tours nationally presenting seminars for the American Montessori Society and Yamaha, Inc.
Summer Jazz Intensive
A versatile bassist, Maud Beenhouwer is best known for her association with the salsa bands, Charanga del Valle and Terra Plena. She is equally adept playing blues and bebop having performed with the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra and various local blues bands. Ms. Beenhouwer taught at the Summer Jazz Intensive and the JCC Jazz Intensive in 2003 and teaches beginning improv at the Outpost Performance Space.

A fulltime musician, she currently gigs regularly with the Koolers, Swingset, Savoy, and Café Mocha in addition to teaching privately. This is Ms. Tag's fourth year teaching at the Summer Jazz Intensive.
